Blue Angels Airshow - Quonset Point, RIJune 19, 2005
The Blue Angels were featured at the Rhode Island National Guard airshow.
The Rhode Island National Guard has been sponsoring an airshow annually at Quonset
Point Air National Guard Base, North Kingstown, RI since 1992. Admission to the airshow is free and only a parking donation
is requested.
The monies raised by the event are donated to local charities.
This year the headline performance was by the Blue Angels.
The Blue Angels are the U.S. Naval Flight Demonstration Squadron.
Their performance is a combination of solo routines and
formation flying. The FA-18 hornet is used exclusively for these flying routines. Last year I photographed the airshow
when the USAF Thunderbirds performed.
Besides the Blue Angels, clearly the highlight of the show, there was an assortment of acrobatic smaller private aircraft and
Les Shockley and his Shockwave Jet Truck. A real bonus was the Canadian Snowbirds who also performed at the airshow. From
the Canadian Snowbirds Webpage: "The Snowbirds fly the Canadair
CT-114 Tutor, a Canadian built jet used by the Canadian Forces as its basic pilot training aircraft until 2000. The Tutor
weighs approximately 7170 lbs (3260 kgs) and is powered by a J-85 engine producing 2,700 pounds of thrust. Top speed of
the aircraft, with smoke tanks attached, is 412 knots (470 mph or 750 km/h)."
For this show Josh & I each brought our Canon gear and photographed the airshow from start to finish.
