Hawaii (Maui & Hawaii) Vacation PhotographsNovember 2005Hawaii (the islands of Maui, Kauai and Hawaii) has always been a favorite vacation destination for Edie & Jerry especially for photographs. This year UConn (The University of Connecticut) was playing in the Maui Invitational Basketball Tournament, always a good excuse to go to Maui and get some good photographs! The tournament is the 3 days preceeding Thanksgiving so we scheduled our itinerary to arrive the Thursday prior to the holiday and then fly to the Big Island of Hawaii for another week after the tournament ended. I had received media credentials for the tournament so I photographed all the games UConn played. It was a really competitive tournament - something you don't usually find this early in the basketball season. Besides Connecticut the rest of the field included Arizona, Arkansas, Gonzaga, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan State and host school Chaminade. The games didn't disappoint! The Gonzaga vs Michigan State triple overtime match in the semi-final round has to be one of the best college basketball games ever played. UConn played & defeated Arkansas, Arizona and Gonzaga to win the tournament title.
Besides watching basketball on Maui we managed to take in some of the other great attractions on the island. One morning
we drove up to the Haleakala Crater, a dormant volcano 10,000 feet above sea level, to watch the sunrise. We, along with two or
three hundred new friends, stood in the 40 degree blackness until the sun slowly rose over the opposite rim. I am sure
that there are mornings when the sunrise is spectacular. This wasn't one of them. Although the sunrise was nice it wasn't
especially dramatic. The early low angle sunlight that illuminated the crater and played out against the earthy colors of this
ancient site did allow for some good photographs.
The highlight of our stay on the Big Island of Hawaii had to be the doors off helicopter ride over the
Kilauea Volcano.
Our pilot was terrific and
the volcano obliged my photography by having a small piece of the bench break off and drop into the ocean while I was
shooting it. We also visited the falls at Akaka State Park, on the road to Hilo. All together it was a great vacation
as we had plenty of time to just sit in the sun and 'veg out' too.
