Competes in the 2005
EA Sports Maui Invitational Tournament
Photographs by Jerry Molaver
The EA Sports Maui Invitational Basketball Tournament has truly come of age. The 2005 field included Connecticut (UConn), Gonzaga,
Kansas, Maryland, Arizona, Arkansas, Michigan State and host school Chaminade of Honolulu. This is an impressive
field measured by anyone's standard. The coaching talent represented here is equally impressive. Two Basketball
Hall of Famers, Jim Calhoun and Lute Olson, bring with them undisputed knowledge of how the game is played as well
as enviable coaching records. The other coaches from the mainland include Stan Heath (Arkansas), Mark Few (Gonzaga),
Bill Self (Kansas), Gary Williams (Maryland) and Tom Izzo (Michigan State). The host school, Chaminade, is coached
by Matt Mahar.
The 1st tournament was played in 1984 in Kona, Hawaii. One of the earliest drivers of the tournament, Wayne Duke,
still serves as Chairman Emeritus. The current chairman, Dave Gavitt, is no stranger to NCAA basketball as he is chair emeritus
of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and former Big East Conference Commissioner. The original 4 team format was changed to 8 teams in 1986 and
the venue was changed to its current home, the Lahaina Civic Center on Maui. Held on the three days prior to Thanksgiving,
the tournament and its associated activites
generate millions of dollars for the island economy. Over the years the Civic Center has been upgraded with some of these monies.
Not the least of these upgrades was the addition of air conditioning in the facility. The Civic Center is really not
unlike a typical mainland high school gym. It is an up close an personal experience for both players and the 2400 or so
fans it holds. This is as good as it gets for the hardcore college basketball fan!
Connecticut (UConn) played and defeated Arkansas, Arizona and Gonzaga to win the championship. The following photographs
were taken November 21-23, 2005 and are primarily of the three games Connecticut (UConn) played.
