Thunderbirds Air Show
Quonset Point, Rhode Island (RI)
June 19, 2004

The USAF Thunderbirds Airshow was scheduled for June 19th. I had just received my new Canon 1D Mark II a few days before this air show. The USAF Thunderbirds are known to put on great show so this seemed like a perfect opportunity to check out the new camera. Quonset Point, Rhode Island is less than 2 hours drive time so I packed my camera gear early in the morning to be sure to get there at the start of the air show. Well, maybe I shouldn't have rushed so much. The first thing I discovered was that even though I got to the Quonset Point Air Station at 9am the air show didn't start for almost another hour. . . Well that gave me time to set up my photography equipment & get a good viewing spot at the edge of the runway. I took a few candid photographs of the already very large crowd with the 70-200 lens I had with me. When I tried to change to my 300mm lens I discovered that in my haste to get an early start I had taken my 200mm f1.8 lens instead of the 300! Since there was plenty of light available the heavier 200mm was just no advantage. I ended up using the 70-200 IS zoom with a 1.4 extender on it for all my photos.

All photographs were taken with a Canon 1D Mark II.
