The 7th ranked Connecticut (UConn) Huskies hung on to beat the 3rd ranked LSU Lady Tigers 51 to 49
at the Hartford Civic Center on Monday night. With the loss LSU tumbles from the unbeaten ranks in
women's basketball.
LSU found out why Connecticut's Charde Houston is going to be their next superstar.
The UConn sophomore forward scored 22 points, including the game winning free throw with 17 seconds left.
Houston had missed four games with a foot injury and her recovery had been eagerly anticipated by the
Connecticut faithful. She didn't disappont. Against LSU Houston played 30 minutes and finished with 14
rebounds, three steals and a block.
Connecticut, now 16-2, was playing their fifth game in 10 days during which they lost to undefeated and #1
ranked Tennessee 89-80 at Tennessee. If they were weary from this rigorous schedule they didn't show it,
putting the 14-1 Lady Tigers on their heels early and taking them completely out of their game. The Lady
Tigers scored a season-low 48 points.
Although UConn led by as much as 16 points they were outscored in the second half 27-21, hardly an
offensive struggle. LSU's Seimone Augustus was averaging 20 points coming into the game but finished
with 15. Her output was hampered by a stifling UConn defense. LSU's 6-foot-6 center Sylvia Fowles
likewise was shut down all game with two and three UConn defenders collapsing on her. Fowles
finished with 15 boards and 12 points, five below her average.
The Connecticut Women Huskies forced LSU out of their methodical offense and into UConn's uptempo game.
"I thought we played fast. I credit UConn with that," LSU coach Pokey Chatman said. "We're not doing
things we've done in the past. It's a battle of wills and it becomes a chess match. And we got kicked
in that category tonight."
